90 Percent Of Nigerian Women Suffer Anaemia -NSN

May 6th, 2015, Lagos: Nigeria faces one of the largest burdens of micro-nutrient deficiencies, with anaemia the most common with a big impact on health of women and children, the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, NSN, have disclosed.

Specifically, 49 per cent of women of reproductive age have anaemia, 24.3 per cent have low iron stores and 12.7 per cent of them are iron deficient.
These figures indicate that majority of the adolescent girls and women did not meet the iron requirements of 20 milligrams per day as recommended by the Food and Agricultural Organisation and, the World Health Organisation.
Iron deficiency anaemia is a condition in which the red blood cells or their oxygen-carrying capacity is insufficient to meet physiological needs of the body. The symptoms of anaemic condition includes, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, drowsiness, shortages of breath and all these militate against active living and human productivity as iron is critical to learning process and energy for day to day activities.
This has raised serious concerns among relevant stakeholders led by the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, NSN, who said that iron is one of the most prevalent micronutrient deficiencies globally, with almost one of every two women of reproductive age being anemic in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos organised by Unilever Nigeria in partnership with the NSN on the impact of Iron deficiency anaemia in Nigeria, Professor Ngozi Nnam, President, Nutrition Society of Nigeria said that the causes of anaemia vary but that approximately fifty percent of the cases are due to iron deficiency.

Aminu Tambuwal’s Governorship Candidacy Shaky Amid Court Case And Closeness To Aliyu Wamakko



Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker, House of Representatives has been running from pillar to post in the last few weeks and he has been clinging to dim hope as his chances of clinching the governorship seat of Sokoto State are getting slipping away from him really fast.
Tambuwal who was declared flag bearer of his party, All Progressive Congress (APC), has been in the middle of a legal battle over irregularities at the governorship primaries.  
Amongst other gross misconducts in the governorship primary election of December 4, 2014 that Tambuwal is answering a case for at the Federal High Court, Abuja are allegations that  the officials of the Sokoto State Government as well as officials of APC denied all other aspirants except Animu Tambuwal access to the delegates.
The screening of delegates on the day of the primaries was not done between the stipulated hours of 8am and 12 noon and the list of the delegates as issued by the National Secretariat  of APC was not used in the conduct of the said election of December 4, 2014.

Impeachment Looms For Gov. Uduaghan Over N40B Bond



Governor of Delta State, Emmanuel Udughan, has secured a N40 billion bond without the consent of 2/3 of members of the state house of assembly.
A whistleblower within the state's House of Assembly informed our correspondent that  the governor muzzled the speaker, Rt. Honourable Onwusanya, representing Oshimili South Constituency, and one (Mrs.) Lyna Ocholor,clerk of the house, to allow him secure  the bond without the consent of members of the House, less than ninety days to the end of his tenure.
Irked by this development, the state house members have vowed to impeach the speaker for acting independently. However, Rt. Honourable Onwusanya has begged his colleagues not to disgrace him out of office, but to allow him resign.
Udughan on the. Other hand, has been working overtime to try to pacify the aggrieved House members.
To this end, the governor called a meeting with members of the state House on Thursday and pleaded with them, promising to give each of them a share of the largess to support their campaign.

Yoruba leaders yesterday, said the only genuine change the nation craves for at the moment is that of the constitution and not of personality at the helm of the country’s affairs.

They, therefore, resolved to work assiduously to ensure that the recommendations of the national conference get translated to concrete realities and back President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election.

More facts appear to be emerging on the allegation by Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that President Goodluck Jonathan gave pastors across the country N6bn to vote against the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), in the presidential election.
A Borno-based Pastor, Kallamu Musa-Dikwa, said on Thursday that the money that was given to pastors by the President was actually N7bn and not N6bn as alleged by Amaechi who doubles as the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation.
